Common facts about and questions for The Necessarian

What is The Necessarian's editing process?
Whether you request editing services or schedule a free Connection Call, I will follow up within 48 hours with a fee quote and proposed timeline, followed by an agreement for you to sign. Edits take place in Google Docs or Word, each with tracked changes. For manuscripts, we will use hardcopies as needed.

Please note: Editing is not a quick process; it takes time, patience, and attention. I do not typically accept rush jobs, but if and when I do, there will be an additional rush fee relative to the amount of editing work needed and the requested turnaround time. As a one-woman business, I am typically booked three months in advance, at least.

How do you establish your rates?
I refer to the Editorial Freelancers Association as a guide for all of my rates.

Does The Necessarian offer grant writing services?
I offer grant writing on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to contact me for more information.

What if I’m self-conscious about my writing?
You’ve come to the right place! I understand that writing is both rigorous and delicate. We will work together in a spirit of support, progress, and clarity.

Does The Necessarian offer advising, consulting, or coaching services for artists?
My editing services include workshops, tutorials, and similar. My advising services focus primarily on artist legacy planning, which can extend to include project management (archiving, inventory, collections, book publishing, and similar.) I am also available for consulting on specific projects at an hourly rate. Please refer to my Services to learn more.

What experience and/or qualifications does The Necessarian have?
I have been working as an editor, writer, and arts administrator for nearly twenty years, and I continue to pursue learning and training in my fields. You can read more and download my resume on the About page of this site.

What kinds of artists does The Necessarian work with?
The majority of my clients are visual artists, educators, curators, gallerists, museum directors, and art historians who write nonfiction and creative nonfiction (artist statements, exhibition texts, catalogue essays, research papers, and similar). I also work with performing artists (dance, theatre) and socially-engaged artists, including those whose practice involves research and activism.

Does The Necessarian work with people other than artists?
Yes. I work primarily with artists but, because artists and their work often defy categorization, I also edit texts about a variety of subjects outside the arts.

Can The Necessarian work with artists who have dyslexia or face other reading and/or writing challenges?
Yes.

Does The Necessarian work with artists who do not speak English, or offer translation services?
Currently, the artists I work with are fluent (or nearly fluent) in English. If you are multilingual and would like to collaborate to offer editing and/or translation services, please feel free to contact me.

I have additional questions about The Necessarian's services. How can I get answers?
You can email me through the Contact page of this website.
